Job Summary/Description

The Department of Biology seeks a collaborative department chair who will enable us to continue to build excellent undergraduate and graduate programs. The ideal candidate will be dedicated, visionary, and possess the leadership skills necessary to help guide a department with 15 full-time faculty and approximately 300 undergraduate and 30 graduate majors. The department is recognized for its organismal and pre-health programs and maintains a nationally recognized natural history collection.

Angelo State University is located in San Angelo, Texas, a city of approximately 100,000 people, in the heart of west Texas. The University has an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students and is a state sponsored coeducational institution governed by the Texas Tech University System. As a regional comprehensive university, Angelo State is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools—Commission on Colleges. Angelo State is proud to have one of the nation’s largest privately funded scholarship programs (Carr Foundation), supported by an endowment of almost of $130 million. For the eighth consecutive year, Angelo State has been recognized by The Princeton Review as one of the country’s best institution for undergraduate education. This designation is awarded only to 15% of the nation’s more than 2,500 four-year colleges. In addition, the Chronicle of Higher Education recently named Angelo State one of the “Great Colleges to Work For” for 2016.
Biology Department faculty members are dedicated to student research and they encourage undergraduate and graduate students to conduct their own projects. The Biology Department has an extensive pre-health professions program that gives guidance and support to students interested in health care careers. The department boasts one of the highest acceptance rates to health professions schools in the state and has unique internship and shadowing opportunities for its students. The department also offers support and resources to students pursuing graduate degrees in biology. Many graduate students have won prestigious research awards and have gone on to a variety of PhD programs.
The Biology Department maintains the Angelo State Natural History Collections, which houses over 100,000 specimens of all types of organisms. The collections are preserved, documented and curated assemblages that are important to a wide array of human activities. Students are encouraged to participate in its management.
The Biological Honor Society (Beta Beta Beta) is one of the largest student organizations on campus and participates in a variety of service projects and assists the department in various ways. Tri Beta has won the Bertholf Award signifying the top chapter in the nation a record 8 times.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

The chair, in cooperation with the faculty, is responsible for supervising activities of the department, scheduling classes, assisting in faculty evaluations, preparing budget requests, managing budgets, initiating appointment recommendations, developing the curriculum, recruiting new students, applying policy, managing departmentally funded scholarships and research grants, supervising assessment activities, and enhancing the department’s academic and professional reputation.
Chairs are on 9-month faculty contracts with a 2-course reduction for administrative duties (i.e. 6 weighted contact hours) each of the long semesters. Chairs are compensated for administrative work during the summer and they have the option of teaching in the summer.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The successful applicant will be skilled in bringing together differing opinions, committed to open and active communication with colleagues, possess strong organizational skills, have a welcoming and inclusive approach to students, and understand that one of his or her primary duties will be to ensure that faculty have the resources needed to excel in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Candidates should be dedicated to excellence in teaching and research with a strong commitment to high professional standards, both inside and outside the classroom. Experience supervising student and faculty research and grant writing is necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university in the field of biology or a closely related field. The specific specialization area within biology is open.

Scholarly credentials and a publication record that would qualify him or her for a tenured position at associate or full professor.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong organizational skills. Strong advocacy for biology faculty, staff, and students is expected.

Collegiality and the ability to collaborate with faculty and administration also are expected.

Knowledge and experience with curriculum development, assessment documentation at the undergraduate and graduate level, and familiarity with SACS or other accreditation agencies would be desirable.
